Assignment #1 Part A 2. What are the symbolic significances of the candy store in Lawrence Ferlinghettis The Pennycandystore Beyond the El (Geddes, 318)? The candy store in The Pennycandystore Beyond the El is symbolic of a childs youth. This poem is referring to the fact that our childhood passes by too soon and the candy store is a reminder that we need to seize every moment to enjoy it. The pennycandystore offers as a retreat or refuge to the bad weather outside and the stresses of everyday life. It takes on the characteristics of an enchanted environment full of magic and wonder, where a child has the opportunity to enjoy their youth without any distractions. The fourth stanza opens with, But he found the mountain was clearly alive (Geddes 161). This is where we begin to see the signs of paranoia and isolation setting into the mans mind. The man gives the mountain human qualities such as feet and the ability to fall asleep (Geddes 161) that further suggest he is slowly losing his mind. In stanza five the man mistakes ospreys for valkyries, When he tried his eyes on the lake ospreys would fall like valkyries (Geddes 161). This is a sign that the man is beginning to panic being in the bush alone and fear is taking its toll. The valkyries as the man sees them are choosing the cut-throat (Geddes 161). The man is becoming delusional and believes birds want to cut his throat. Stanza six shows us the man succumbing to the intimidating force of nature. The moosehorned cedars circled his swamps and tossed their antlers up to the stars (Geddes 162). The man truly believes that the wilderness around him is coming alive. He seems to think, the winds were shaping its peak to an arrowhead (Geddes 162), it meaning the mountain. The isolation the man is experiencing is enhancing his fear, which is depressing his mind, and leading to insanity. The final stanza is the man totally giving up and surrendering to nature. Macbeth Differences Between the Play and Movie Free Essays

The play MacBeth, by William Shakespeare, which we read and the movie, by Rupert Goold’s, which we watch has several diffrences but all put out the same message. The main diffrences in between the play and the movie is the portrayal and functions of the witches, the changes of the setting and some key scenes, and the diffrences of the functions of the main characters and also the minor characters. The portrayal and function of the witches in the original play of MacBeth and the movie have several diffrences. Also throughout the movie the witches are roaming around in the background of pretty much every scene. There are several diffrences between the play and the movie but the main diffrence is the setting of the two. In the movie by Rupert Goold the setting of the ‘’play’’ is in the 1900’s when World War II was taking place. MacBeth and all the other characters are in a Nazi-based area. Where as in the play originally created by William Shakespeare, it is taken place in the olden days, way long ago where it is taken place in a castle with kings and such. Another great diffrence inbetween the two are the weapons used. In the riginal play the main weapons are swords and sheilds and daggers and so on, where as in Goold’s movie the weapons are semi-automatic machine guns, bombs and more new-age weapons. A major scene diffrence in the movie from the play is when the 3 murderers go out to kill Banquo and his son. Instead of Banquo and his son on a horse strolling, they are in a train cabin. In the play the three murderers are Caithness, Angus and MacBeth where as in the play thew three murderers are Caithness, Angus and Lennox instead of MacBeth. For whiskey he imitates a dialogue between me and Mae. Next he imitates the Hawkins sisters, neighbors of Alex. After Sunday chicken dinner at Alexs Johnny imitates the doctor asking Emalin why Amy tried to hang herself. After two weeks of trouble with the dredging, we learn that Amy has killed herself. Johnnys imitation includes Amys pregnancy. Alex punches Johnny and explains later. 10. The Murder Jim Moore visits the Three Star in Monterey on Saturdays. He marries Jelka Sepic who is obedient but quiet. George tells Jim, on his way to the Three Stars (hes hunting) hes seen a calf of his dead.
